Saying ‘bye’ to facial lines & tired eyes at Halley Medical Aesthetics

About 11-12 years ago, I wondered if I’ll ever need botox and dermal fillers one day. Seeing my then-20-something-year-old colleague with a frozen smile and often expressionless face didn’t give me a good impression about facial aesthetics treatments.

Fast forward to 2020, I’ve had my first experience with Botox and fillers treatments, done at Halley Medical Aesthetics in Singapore! I need a pat for being brave, if you know me… *sheepish smile*

What made me think about “doing stuff” to my face? I’m not (yet) a haggard-looking woman, with plenty of lines like railway tracks adorning my face. Also, is it gonna be painful?!

Why did I decide to undergo Botox and fillers on my face?

As much as I’d like to deny the effects of ageing, it’s apparent that my skin has aged. LOL. In fact, I’m pretty sure my laziness in skincare right after having Leroy, greatly contributed to the deterioration of my skin texture and appearance. Sleep debt since 7 years ago added to it too. HA!

Fine lines have since appeared under my eyes and so have crow’s feet! There’s only so much our skincare can do, honestly. I’ve been using eye cream since 17yo (read on to find out why! LOL!). Thanks to having kids, I’ve been frowning A LOT more. I kid you not! All these expressions have caused static lines to form across my forehead at resting position! NO JOKE! Coupled with my combination skin type, these facial lines appear more obvious even when I’m NOT raising my eyebrows or squinching up my face.

Botox and fillers are not just for correcting aged skin. In fact, these aesthetic treatments are preventive steps to slow down skin ageing, deterioration due to time, genes, lifestyle etc. Prevention is better than cure if that’s an analogy to put to it :) It’s “harder” to correct when the lines deeper, and that will be more expensive too, right? :P

The final push – my husband actually said that he could see lines on my face, especially those crow’s feet when I laugh or flash a big smile! *cries*

Hello, subtle facial enhancement and rejuvenation, here I come to reverse ageing, please! Yup, nothing as drastic as plastic surgery! #thanksbutnothanks At least not now.

First impressions of Halley Medical Aesthetics and my consultation with Dr. Mark Lim

I did some research to look for reviews and patients’ sentiments of the aesthetics treatments that I was considering, and Halley Medical Aesthetics (魅丽医学美容诊所) was one of the clinics that came up. Their aesthetics doctors have helped many mums in Singapore zap away wrinkles and expression lines with Botox and dermal fillers, along with other face, neck treatments. Just right beside Halley Medical Aesthetics is Halley Body Slimming Clinic, which specialises in body treatments and they have helped many mums fix their mum bods too.

I made an appointment and Dr. Mark Lim, who has over 4 years of experience as an aesthetics doctor in Singapore, attended to me.

During my consultation with Dr. Mark Lim at Halley Medical Aesthetics, he assessed my facial appearance and recommended suitable aesthetic treatments to improve how I look :)

This locally-owned clinic is conveniently located at orchardgateway, and it was a spacious place that was clean yet beautifully decorated in a Victorian style. It was nothing like what I had imagined – white, sterile and clinical and cold-looking. I basically stepped into an inviting space that felt pretty princessy, if I may say!

During the consultation, Dr. Mark Lim asked about my face and body concerns, so I shared about the uneven skin tone around my eye contours – a male classmate in my JC years used to tease me back then (apparently, it looks like jaundice around my eyes when I was 17!), along with crow’s feet and frown lines.

As for my body, it’d be great to get rid of that postpartum tummy, but I knew it would be tricky because of my post-pregnancy Diastasis Recti condition. So, let’s work on something more realistic – the subtle improvement would be more visible too. Haha!

Asking questions before getting facial aesthetics treatments

Dr. Mark Lim listened patiently, assessed my face and explained about the different aesthetics treatments based on my concerns. We discussed questions like: What to expect during each procedure? Will there be any downtime? Any special aftercare or things to use thereafter? Which is better – Botox or fillers?

MOST IMPORTANTLY – Will getting botox and fillers be painful???

Yes, the pain factor was CRITICAL to me.

Dr. Mark Lim assured that the discomfort was minimal as numbing cream will be used (yay!!!), and downtime was almost zilch. There might be some slight bruising after the dermal fillers, depending on individuals, but that’s about it! I could simply get on with my day right after, apart from avoiding strenuous exercising and pressing on treated areas the next 2 days. As for the Botulinum Neuromodulators (Botox), I’d just have to avoid rubbing the area, remain upright for 4 hours after the procedure and simply avoid alcohol. EASY PEASY!

Did you know that there are different “hardness/intensity” for dermal fillers? Dr. Mark Lim shares about the Juvederm brand which has a range of differentiated firmness and viscosity (thickness and stickiness) of the gel. He recommends Volbella for me, something that’s “softer” to create a natural result.

Ladies, if you are trying to conceive (TTC) or you are currently breastfeeding, it is recommended that you check with your doctor prior to your treatments.

Treatment day: was it painful to get Botox and fillers at Halley Medical Aesthetics?

After discussing it with my husband, we decided to go for Botox and dermal fillers and left my face in the good hands of Dr. Mark Lim. It’s my first time – wish me luck!!

To be honest, I was pretty nervous. I’m really thankful that the team at Halley was very patient with me, and they kept assuring me that it’s not gonna hurt – maybe like an ant bite, that’s it. HAHAHA. Embarrassing much! >.<

Are you wondering: can Botox and fillers be done at the same time?

The answer is YES!

All smiles, but feeling nervous about the pain! After removing my makeup, Dr Mark Lim marks out the areas for the injection sites to prep for the Botox and fillers procedure.

Thank goodness for numbing cream, I didn’t feel anything much at all, except for the initial prick! Dr. Mark Lim used the Juvederm Hyaluronic Acid dermal fillers to fill up the hollow area in between my under eyes and cheekbones to create a more supple and lifted appearance so that the indented shadows are reduced. This helps to allow light to fall onto a lifted angle and reduce the appearance of dark circles.

Juvederm fillers contain lidocaine, an anaesthesia which minimises discomfort during treatment. Before the under-eye dermal fillers are administered, the kind therapist used ice packs to numb my skin. So the pain factor was actually almost ZERO!!

Kissing my crow’s feet goodbye with Botox injections to help relax those muscles. For better overall appearance, doc gave me a brow lift to rejuvenate my tired-looking eye area!

Here’s sharing my before and after pictures (taken on treatment day)

Guess how long it took? Just about an hour for the procedures! Now I understand why some people can zip off to get their jabs during lunch break and others are none the wiser! It’s almost like going for a facial and there’s no downtime, discomfort or redness!

Baring it all with no makeup or filters here! Photos taken before and right after my Botox and filler procedures. If you zoom in, you can see the tiny injection sites, but they went off within the day! From these frontal comparison shots, my under eye area looks brighter, don’t you think? It takes about a week or so for full effects to show up – will share the post-treatment update next, stay tuned!

The undereye fillers (tear-trough filler) are more obvious from my side view. Dr. Mark Lim uses the “Magic Needle” aka micro-cannula to rejuvenate that area by filling it up with Hyaluronic Acid, an ingredient that retains and locks moisture for bouncier skin. It distributes the filler more evenly, and as it is blunt and extremely pliable, it slides under our skin with minimal discomfort.

If you’re wondering how much dermal fillers and Botox cost, check out Halley Medical Aesthetics website – they’re very transparent about it. In fact, prior to my treatments, I personally found their articles insightful in providing a newbie with info about different aesthetics treatments. *Thumbs up* Making an informed decision is necessary! :)

The final million dollar question – how long do fillers and Botox last? Fillers can last at about a year, while Botox can last up to six months, again, these will depending on the individual.

Will share more photos from my post-treatment review to compare the before and after results with Botox and fillers then after they’ve pretty much settled. Look out for my next update here! :)

Are you thinking about getting dermal fillers or Botox at a clinic near you? My advice: look for a reputable aesthetics doctor in a clinic to get such beauty treatments done with a peace of mind.
